These classes are being offered as part of Doe Camp, a weekend-long Winter Outdoor Skills camp for women ages 15 and up at the Hulbert Outdoor Center in Fairlee, Vermont. It's a great opportunity for women to grow in confidence and outdoor skills together!
These classes are open to women only, as part of the Doe Camp experience
Mark will teach two classes Saturday:
Principles of Winter Survival and Winter Clothing 8:30 - 11:30
This class provides an overview of the essential components of winter survival, emphasizing the physiology of survival in cold conditions. We will also take an in depth look at the best winter clothing and use of winter clothing, as this is the most important tool in winter survival. We will also discuss how to develop a survival plan and build a survival kit.
Winter fire skills: 1 - 4 PM
In the winter wilderness, the difference between warmth and comfort and struggling to survive is the ability to build a fire in any conditions. Learn to make a fire with a single match that will work in
challenging, wet and cold conditions. Learn to select the correct wood in winter, learn sources of tinder and kindling, and how to adapt to snow and wind conditions. Learn to build a cooking fire and an overnight winter survival fire that can keep you warm at 40 below zero. We'll also learn about using axes and knives for fire starting, and will discuss multiple modern and primitive fire-ignition systems. |
